The anime adapts the story of Satoko Kirigaya, whose noble upbringing and poor health make marriage a pressing concern, and Shinpei, the assassin whose world collides with hers. Viewers can expect the adaptation to preserve the tension between Satoko's sheltered life and the violence surrounding Shinpei's profession, along with the Meiji-era social pressures that shape their arrangement.
Anime-first viewers do not need manga knowledge to follow the premiere episodes. The opening arc introduces the premise, the main pairing, and the stakes from scratch.
